How do home improvement pros decide where to shop?
What drives remodeling, landscaping and other home improvement pros to shop at a home improvement warehouse store versus a specialty distributor? What factors do they consider most critical for strong supplier partnerships?
The Home Improvement Research Institute (HIRI) explored these questions and more via its quarterly survey, with a focus on channel selection drivers in Q3 2018. Here are a few highlights:
- From remodeling to mechanical products, price is the No. 1 consideration, though getting a good deal is slightly less important for products related to finish work, such as paint.
- Landscapers and remodelers also count quality as a key consideration when shopping for products.
- Customer service plays a strong role: home improvement pros universally rank “Quickly and efficiently resolves issues” above preference for a particular brand.
- Contractor rewards programs, while viewed as a positive, are not a game-changer.
- Amazon is growing. While home improvement warehouse and hardware stores continue to lead the way, the online marketplace giant now serves as a go-to for nearly one-quarter of home improvement pros shopping for on-the-job products.
